The Sagnarigu Municipal Security Council has imposed a daily dusk-to-dawn curfew on Damankunyili, Nyeshie and adjoining communities following a violent clash that left one person dead and six others injured.
The security restrictions, which took effect on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, cover affected areas along the Tamale–Bolgatanga Highway in the Northern Region. The curfew will remain in force until further notice as authorities work to restore peace and protect residents.
The violence reportedly arose from a longstanding land and boundary dispute between the sister communities. Both Damankunyili and Nyeshie are claiming ownership of the same parcel of land.
One person was confirmed dead following the confrontation, while six others suffered injuries of varying severity. The injured victims are receiving medical treatment at local health facilities.
Security agencies have arrested seven people in connection with the violence. Investigations are continuing to identify everyone involved and establish the full circumstances surrounding the clash.
The curfew was announced after an emergency security meeting chaired by the Sagnarigu Municipal Chief Executive, Abdulai Imoro Gong.
Under the directive, movement within the affected communities is prohibited between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. each day. Residents are required to remain indoors during the restricted hours unless they receive authorization from the appropriate security authorities.
MUSEC has also imposed a complete ban on the possession or carrying of firearms, ammunition and other offensive weapons within the affected area.
Anyone found violating the weapons ban or curfew risks arrest and prosecution.
A joint police and military task force has been deployed to the communities and along the Tamale–Bolgatanga Highway. Security personnel are conducting intensified patrols to prevent retaliatory attacks and maintain public order.
The Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu, Atta Issah, has appealed to traditional leaders, youth groups, residents and regional media organizations to avoid inflammatory statements that could worsen tensions.
He urged the two communities to embrace peaceful dialogue and allow the appropriate authorities to resolve the underlying land dispute through lawful processes.
Authorities have assured the public that the curfew will be reviewed as the security situation improves. Residents have been encouraged to cooperate with the security agencies and report any suspicious activity or breaches of the restrictions.
