Residents of Damanko in the Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region have appealed to the government to commission and operationalize the community’s E-Block Community Day Senior High School without further delay.
The residents say the facility has remained unused since 2015 despite being substantially completed, denying young people in the area access to secondary education within their community.
According to community members, the prolonged delay has placed considerable financial and emotional pressure on families. Parents are compelled to send their children to senior high schools outside the district, resulting in additional expenses for transportation, accommodation and other educational needs.
They noted that these costs are particularly difficult for low-income households and could prevent some qualified students from continuing their education after junior high school.
The project was initiated during the administration of former President John Dramani Mahama as part of efforts to expand access to secondary education. Although major construction work has reportedly been completed, the school has yet to admit students or begin academic activities.
Beyond improving access to education, residents believe opening the school would create employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity in Damanko and surrounding communities. Local businesses, transport operators, food vendors and accommodation providers are among those expected to benefit from its operation.
The community has consequently appealed to the Member of Parliament for Nkwanta North, John Kwabena Oti Bless; the District Chief Executive, Dordoe Kudjoe Isaiah; and the Ministry of Education to intervene urgently.
Residents insist that the school should be treated as an important public investment capable of transforming the lives of young people rather than being allowed to remain idle.
They are calling on the authorities to complete any outstanding work, provide the necessary furniture and teaching materials, post qualified staff and formally commission the facility for immediate use.
