Nigerian entrepreneur Damilola Olokesusi has emerged as one of Africa’s leading technology innovators after raising more than $5 million to build Shuttlers, a shared mobility platform that is reshaping urban transportation across the continent.
Founded with the goal of easing the daily commuting challenges faced by millions of people in Lagos, Nigeria, Shuttlers has grown from a modest startup into one of Africa’s largest technology-enabled transport networks, completing more than 10 million passenger trips since its launch.
From Humble Beginnings to a Leading Mobility Platform
Olokesusi co-founded Shuttlers in 2016, starting with limited resources and relying on simple tools such as WhatsApp and Microsoft Excel to coordinate bookings.
In its early days, the company faced numerous obstacles, including funding constraints and gender bias from some traditional transport operators. Despite these challenges, the startup steadily gained traction by providing reliable and technology-driven commuter services.
Today, Shuttlers has evolved into a sophisticated mobility platform serving thousands of commuters while empowering independent transport operators.
Growth Fueled by Innovation
Before attracting venture capital, Shuttlers built a sustainable business model by serving corporate clients and generating more than $1 million in organic revenue.
The company secured contracts with organizations such as Andela, demonstrating the demand for efficient employee transportation solutions.
As the platform expanded, it attracted financial support from international organizations and strategic partners, including Ford Motor Company and telecommunications giant Airtel, helping accelerate its growth and technological development.
A First for Nigeria
Shuttlers also achieved a major industry milestone by becoming Nigeria’s first private shared mobility platform to integrate directly with Google Transit.
The integration enables commuters to access Shuttlers’ services through Google Maps, making route planning and trip scheduling more convenient while improving access to public transportation information.
Empowering Transport Operators
Beyond serving passengers, Shuttlers has developed technology solutions that help transport providers improve efficiency and profitability.
The platform currently supports more than 160 independent transport operators, offering route optimization software, fleet management tools, and vehicle financing opportunities that enable operators to expand their businesses while delivering better services to commuters.
Driving the Future of Urban Mobility in Africa
Olokesusi’s vision extends far beyond operating a commuter shuttle service.
She is positioning Shuttlers as a comprehensive technology platform capable of powering urban mobility across Africa by connecting passengers, transport operators, businesses, and city infrastructure through intelligent mobility solutions.
As African cities continue to experience rapid urbanization and increasing transportation demands, Shuttlers aims to play a central role in creating smarter, more efficient, and sustainable public transport systems across the continent.
