Dangote Refinery Raises Record $2.5 Billion Ahead of Planned Historic IPO

Dangote Refinery Raises Record $2.5 Billion

Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has successfully raised $2.5 billion through a private equity placement, marking what the company describes as the largest publicly disclosed primary equity private placement in African corporate history.

The fundraising was announced in a statement issued by the Dangote Group on Thursday, July 23, 2026, and is expected to support the refinery’s expansion plans while paving the way for a landmark initial public offering (IPO).

The transaction represents the refinery’s first major equity raise involving external investors and underscores growing confidence in one of Africa’s largest industrial projects.

Strong Investor Demand

According to the Dangote Group, the private placement attracted overwhelming interest from institutional investors across Africa and beyond.

The offering was reportedly 3.7 times oversubscribed, generating investor demand of approximately $4 billion, well above the targeted fundraising amount.

The transaction involved the sale of an equity stake of up to 6%, implying a valuation of about $40 billion for Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals.

Among the major investors participating in the fundraising were the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and India Infra Buildco, an investment vehicle supported by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank).

Funds to Support Expansion

The newly raised capital will be used to accelerate the refinery’s long-term growth strategy and strengthen its financial position.

According to the company, the funds will help finance plans to increase refining capacity from the current 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028.

The investment will also support the continued development of the company’s integrated petrochemical complex near Lagos, as well as enhance its overall capital structure to provide greater financial flexibility for future projects.

Aliko Dangote described the transaction as an important step toward broadening the company’s shareholder base while complementing internally generated cash flows.

Preparing for a Landmark IPO

Following the successful completion of the private placement, the company is now preparing for what could become one of the largest stock market listings in Africa.

Dangote Refinery is expected to launch an initial public offering (IPO) on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) as early as August 2026.

Under the proposed plan, the company intends to offer an additional 5% to 10% equity stake to public investors, with the aim of raising between $1.5 billion and $2 billion.

The planned listing is expected to provide institutional investors, retail investors, and members of the Nigerian diaspora with an opportunity to own shares in Africa’s largest oil refinery.

Transforming Africa’s Energy Sector

Located near Lagos, the Dangote Refinery is regarded as one of the continent’s most significant industrial investments.

Since commencing operations, the refinery has been viewed as a key project in reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products, strengthening domestic fuel supply, and supporting regional energy security.

The latest capital raise is expected to accelerate the refinery’s expansion while reinforcing its position as a major player in Africa’s energy and petrochemical industries.
