The Ministry of Defence has formally welcomed Kenneth Gilbert Adjei as Ghana’s new Defence Minister, nearly one year after the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of former Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and seven others.
Mr Adjei officially assumed duty on his first day in office, beginning his tenure at a ministry still grappling with the loss of senior government officials and military personnel in the August 6, 2025 helicopter disaster.
A Guard of Honour was mounted at the Ministry to formally receive the new minister as he arrived to take up his responsibilities.
He was subsequently welcomed by management and staff, including Chief Director Emmanuel Kartey, Chief of the Defence Staff Lieutenant General William Agyapong, and the various Service Chiefs.
The ceremony also provided Mr Adjei with the opportunity to meet and interact with senior officials and staff as he settled into his new role.
His assumption of office comes at a particularly sensitive time for the Defence Ministry and Ghana’s wider security establishment, following the death of Dr Omane Boamah and seven others in the helicopter crash.
Dr Omane Boamah, a former Defence Minister and prominent figure in Ghana’s security administration, was among those killed when a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crashed while travelling to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
The tragedy plunged the nation into mourning and left the Defence Ministry without a substantive political head at a time when the military and other security agencies were also grieving the loss of senior personnel.
Mr Adjei therefore takes charge against the backdrop of a national tragedy, with expectations that he will provide strong leadership and work closely with the military leadership and staff to advance Ghana’s defence and security interests.
The Ministry said the warm reception accorded the new minister reflected its readiness to work with him as he begins his tenure and assumes responsibility for overseeing the country’s defence affairs.
