Deputy Transport Minister Cuts Sod for 24-Hour Market Project in Elubo to Boost Cross-Border Trade

Deputy transportation minister

Jomoro Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister for Transport Dorcas Affo-Toffey has officially cut the sod for the construction of a new 24-Hour Economy Market in Elubo, a flagship initiative aimed at revitalizing commerce and supporting traders in the busy border community.

The project is expected to stimulate economic activity in Elubo, which has faced significant commercial challenges in recent years due to border restrictions and disruptions to cross-border trade.

Project Launch Marks Major Development Milestone

The sod-cutting ceremony was held on Friday, June 12, 2026, and brought together local government officials, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders. Among those in attendance were Jomoro Municipal Chief Executive Benedict Boadi and Awulae Kwasi Armachie III, President of the Western Nzema Traditional Council.

The planned market will incorporate modern infrastructure, including enhanced lighting and security systems, to facilitate trading activities throughout the day and night.

Supporting the 24-Hour Economy Vision

The market forms part of broader efforts to promote round-the-clock economic activity and expand opportunities for businesses operating in border communities.

Speaking during the ceremony, Dorcas Affo-Toffey highlighted the important role women play in supporting families and local economies. She explained that a flexible, 24-hour trading environment would enable many women to better balance household responsibilities while engaging in business activities at times that suit their schedules.

Complementing Border Infrastructure Improvements

The proposed market is expected to work alongside other recent infrastructure developments designed to improve transportation and trade in Elubo.

Among these is the newly commissioned Elubo Freight Park, commonly known as the Elubo Articulator Terminal, developed through collaboration between the Jomoro Municipal Assembly and the Ghana Shippers Authority. The facility was established to reduce congestion at the Ghana–Côte d’Ivoire border and provide an organized staging area for cargo trucks and long-distance transport operators.

By easing traffic flow and improving logistics, authorities hope the combined projects will strengthen Elubo’s position as a key gateway for regional commerce.

Additional Utility Projects Underway

Beyond the market initiative, Affo-Toffey’s office has also launched several infrastructure improvements to support surrounding communities. These include seven new potable water projects intended to expand access to clean water and enhance living conditions in the Elubo area.

Traders Optimistic About Economic Revival

Local trade associations and border business leaders have welcomed the market project, expressing confidence that extended trading hours and improved infrastructure will help restore commercial activity and create new opportunities for entrepreneurs.

Many stakeholders believe the initiative will contribute to the recovery of cross-border businesses and reinforce Elubo’s role as an important commercial hub linking Ghana with neighboring Côte d’Ivoire.
