Dr. Bawumia Calls for United National Response to Accra Flooding, Urges Government to Consider State of Emergency

Bawumia

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia has called for a united, non-partisan national response to Ghana’s recurring flooding crisis, urging political leaders, experts, and citizens to work together to find lasting solutions.

Speaking on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, during an emergency tour of flood-affected communities in Accra, Dr. Bawumia described the devastating floods as a national challenge that should not be politicized. His appeal came after torrential rains on Monday, June 29, caused widespread destruction, displaced hundreds of residents, damaged homes and businesses, and claimed lives in several parts of the capital.

“Let Politics Be Put Aside”

Addressing residents and the media during his tour, Dr. Bawumia stressed that flooding is a national problem that requires collective action rather than partisan debate.

He urged political leaders and the public to avoid using the tragedy for political advantage, emphasizing that protecting lives and property must remain the country’s top priority.

Let us put politics aside and solve flooding together for Ghana.”

According to him, sustainable solutions can only be achieved when all stakeholders focus on the shared goal of addressing the country’s long-standing drainage and environmental challenges.

Calls for Expert-Led Solutions

Dr. Bawumia said Ghana must adopt a comprehensive approach to tackling perennial flooding by bringing together experts from multiple disciplines.

He called for closer collaboration among hydrologists, civil engineers, environmental specialists, urban planners, and other professionals to develop practical and long-term flood mitigation strategies, regardless of political affiliation.

Visits Flood-Hit Communities

During the inspection tour, the former Vice President visited several of the worst-affected communities across the Greater Accra Region to assess the extent of the destruction and interact with affected residents.

The communities visited included:

  • Atala in the Ga South Municipality
  • Anyaa Sowutuom
  • Santa Maria
  • Odawna

Residents recounted stories of flooded homes, destroyed belongings, and significant disruptions caused by the heavy rainfall.

Backs Call for State of Emergency

Citing weather forecasts that indicate the likelihood of additional heavy rainfall in the coming days, Dr. Bawumia urged the government to consider declaring a state of emergency.

He argued that such a declaration would strengthen coordination among emergency response agencies, accelerate rescue operations, and facilitate the rapid deployment of resources to vulnerable communities.

According to him, extraordinary measures may be necessary to minimize further loss of life and property if the adverse weather conditions persist.

Appeals for Immediate Humanitarian Support

Dr. Bawumia also highlighted the urgent needs of families displaced by the floods, many of whom have lost their homes and essential belongings.

He called for close coordination with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and appealed to corporate institutions, non-governmental organizations, faith-based groups, and individuals to support ongoing relief efforts.

Among the most pressing needs identified were:

  • Food supplies for families unable to access kitchens or local markets.
  • Clothing, blankets, mattresses, and other essential household items for residents taking refuge in temporary shelters.
  • Additional humanitarian assistance to support communities affected by the flooding.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that while emergency relief is critical in the short term, Ghana must also pursue lasting infrastructure and environmental solutions to prevent the recurring floods that continue to affect Accra and other parts of the country year after year.
