Dr Patrick Ofori Calls for Overhaul of Black Stars Coaches’ Salaries and Bonuses

Former Black Stars psychologist Dr Patrick Ofori has called for a comprehensive review of the payment structure for Ghana’s senior national team coaches, questioning the justification for substantial monthly salaries alongside winning bonuses that exceed those paid to players.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Dr Ofori argued that paying a salaried head coach twice the winning bonus received by members of the playing squad places an unjustifiable financial burden on the national team.

He urged football authorities to abolish the double-bonus arrangement and adopt a more financially sustainable approach to rewarding coaches.

Dr Ofori said concerns about the compensation structure had already been addressed in the Justice Senyo Dzamefe Commission’s report on Ghana’s troubled 2014 World Cup campaign. He maintained that recommendations intended to improve the management of national team finances remained unimplemented.

His comments add to debate over spending on the Black Stars’ technical staff, particularly the cost of salaries, performance incentives and payments arising from early contract terminations.

Government disclosures reported in April 2026 put compensation paid to the team’s last four dismissed head coaches at more than $800,000. Public officials also disclosed that Carlos Queiroz’s monthly salary as Black Stars coach was $80,000.

Such expenditure has drawn scrutiny amid concerns about inadequate investment in domestic football, sporting facilities and player development.

In a separate call for reform, Dr Ofori urged stakeholders to establish a system through which schools that develop young footballers can benefit financially when those players secure professional transfers.

He argued that recognizing the contribution of schools would help support the institutions responsible for nurturing talent at the grassroots level.
