Drone Strikes in Northern Ethiopia Leave at Least 27 Civilians Dead, Reports Say

Drone strikes in Ethiopia’s northern Amhara and Tigray regions have reportedly killed at least 27 civilians, including children and pregnant women, according to separate accounts from rescue workers, residents and medical sources.

The attacks occurred on Thursday and Friday, October 29 and 30, 2026, amid renewed fighting involving federal forces and armed groups in northern Ethiopia.

Displacement Camp Hit in Amhara

A series of drone strikes hit the Hayiq Jari 2 displacement camp in the Amhara region on Thursday, killing at least 15 people, according to sources involved in rescue efforts.

Other residents reported a death toll of 16. Witnesses said children and pregnant women were among those killed, while more than 20 people were reportedly injured.

The camp shelters people who had fled earlier violence. Residents said several explosions struck the site, causing panic as families sought safety.

Responsibility for the attack on the camp has not been established.

Civilians Killed While Collecting Grain in Tigray

In a separate incident on Friday, at least 12 civilians were reportedly killed in a drone strike in the town of Rama, in the Tigray region.

Local and medical sources said residents had gathered to collect sorghum scattered from a privately owned truck that had been hit in an earlier strike on Thursday night. Another strike hit the area the following morning, killing people and injuring several others.

Conflict monitor ACLED recorded 12 civilian deaths in the Rama incident and said it believed Ethiopian federal forces carried out the strike.

Renewed Conflict

The attacks come as Ethiopian federal forces face armed opposition in parts of Amhara and Tigray, where fighting has raised concerns about the safety of civilians.

The Ethiopian military had not responded to requests for comment on the reported incidents when the accounts were published.
