The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has suspended the planned rollout of its new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-embedded licence plates, which was expected to begin on January 2, 2026.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 24, 2025, the Authority said the decision follows delays in completing the required legislative processes to support the new system.

Earlier this year, the DVLA announced plans to introduce RFID-embedded licence plates to improve vehicle traceability, enhance road safety, and modernise Ghana’s vehicle registration framework. The initiative, however, depended on amendments to two key legal instruments: the Road Traffic Act, 2004 (Act 683), and the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), which outlines specifications for licence plates.

While Parliament successfully passed amendments to Act 683, the proposed changes to L.I. 2180 could not be completed before Parliament adjourned on Friday, December 19, 2025.

“As a result, the DVLA announces the suspension of the planned rollout of the new licence plates originally scheduled for January 2, 2026,” the Authority stated.

In the meantime, the DVLA has extended the use of existing Departure from Port (DP) stickers and DV licence plates. Vehicles currently using these plates and stickers may continue to do so until a new deadline is announced.

The Authority also assured the public that vehicle registration services will continue in 2026 at all DVLA regional offices. However, vehicles registered during this period will be required to undergo re-registration once the new license plate system is officially launched.

“The new license plate rollout plan will take effect as soon as the legislative requirements are settled,” the statement added.

The DVLA expressed appreciation to the public for their patience and cooperation and reaffirmed its commitment to public safety, noting that the introduction of RFID-embedded licence plates remains a key priority once all regulatory conditions are met.
