The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has held separate diplomatic meetings with representatives of Kenya and Portugal to explore opportunities for closer cooperation.
The discussions took place on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. General Birame Diop met individually with Kenyan Ambassador Isaac K. Parashina and Portuguese Ambassador Paolo Martins dos Santos.
The meetings focused on strengthening existing partnerships, expanding people-to-people connections and identifying sectors where joint initiatives could deliver practical benefits.
Peace, security and sustainable development featured prominently in the engagements. The parties emphasized the importance of sustained diplomatic dialogue in addressing shared regional and international challenges.
They also discussed the need for workable cooperation arrangements that would translate diplomatic commitments into concrete economic and development outcomes. Particular attention was given to ensuring that future initiatives are practical, sustainable and responsive to shared priorities.
The engagements form part of ECOWAS’s efforts to deepen its external partnerships and build connections that support West Africa’s development objectives. Further cooperation with Kenya and Portugal would provide opportunities to strengthen the bloc’s engagement with partners in East Africa and Europe.
