Egypt has reportedly submitted a formal request to the United States for new F-16 Viper Block 70 fighter jets as part of a wider effort to modernize one of Africa’s largest air forces.
The request was reportedly made during the 2026 Egypt International Airshow at El Alamein, where international defense companies and military delegations showcased advanced aviation technologies.
Cairo is seeking a long-term replacement for some of its oldest combat aircraft, many of which have been operating for more than three decades. Egypt currently possesses between 220 and 240 F-16s, making it one of the world’s largest operators of the American-made fighter.
About 129 of the aircraft are believed to be older Block 15, 32 and 40 variants delivered between 1982 and 1995. Defense industry sources say these airframes have become too old and technically limited to be upgraded to the latest Viper configuration.
Previous improvements have extended the operational usefulness of some of the aircraft but have not fully addressed structural fatigue, outdated sensors and other technological limitations associated with the older models.
The newly manufactured F-16 Block 70 would provide Egypt with more advanced radar, avionics and electronic warfare capabilities. The aircraft is equipped with the AN/APG-83 Active Electronically Scanned Array radar, which offers improved detection, tracking and targeting performance against airborne and ground threats.
It also features a modern digital cockpit and a structural service life of up to 12,000 flight hours, approximately twice the design limit associated with early Block 15 variants. These improvements would allow Egypt to maintain the size of its fighter fleet while gradually withdrawing aircraft approaching the end of their operational lives.
The reported request forms part of Cairo’s broader strategy of obtaining military equipment from several international partners. Egypt has acquired French Dassault Rafale fighters and is reportedly considering additional aircraft to strengthen its fleet.
Cairo has also expanded military cooperation with China. Chinese J-16 fighters recently participated in joint exercises with Egyptian Rafales, highlighting the country’s effort to maintain defense relationships with both Western and Eastern powers.
Egypt was ranked first in Africa and 19th globally in Global Firepower’s 2026 military strength assessment. The index evaluates factors including equipment, manpower, finances, logistics and geography.
The possible F-16 acquisition would complement Egypt’s mixed combat fleet and allow the country to preserve its regional air-power capabilities with newer sensors, improved avionics and longer-lasting airframes.
However, the United States has not publicly confirmed the reported request, while no proposed sale has yet been formally announced or approved. Any agreement would be subject to the American Foreign Military Sales process and congressional review.
