A 32-year-old errand boy, Abraham Awondok, has been deported from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates to Ghana after being linked to the murder of Accra-based medical practitioner Dr. Jesse Amuah and his wife, Elizabeth Esi Amuah.
The suspect’s surname has also appeared in some reports as Awundok or Awendok.
Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, addressing a press briefing, said the suspect allegedly confessed to killing the couple after he was returned to Ghana.
Dr. Amuah and his wife were last seen on March 23, 2026. A formal missing persons report was filed on April 22 after their residence was found locked and their private vehicle could not be located.
The missing vehicle was identified as a Nissan Sunny with registration number GX 159-X.
Following the report, a joint police team comprising officers from the Missing Persons Unit, Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and Crime Scene Management Team began investigations into the couple’s disappearance.
Searches conducted at their residence and other locations connected to the investigation led to the recovery of their remains. The bodies were subsequently taken to the Police Hospital Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Police investigations identified Awondok, who worked as an errand boy for the couple, as the principal suspect in the case.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly stole mobile phones, cash and the couple’s vehicle after the killings before fleeing Ghana.
Investigators later established that he had travelled to the United Arab Emirates. Ghanaian authorities consequently obtained an INTERPOL Red Notice to facilitate his arrest and return.
Awondok was arrested by authorities in Dubai and deported to Ghana on August 30, 2026. He returned in the custody of officers from the Ghana Police Service’s Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and INTERPOL.
Police are expected to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killings as preparations are made to place the suspect before the appropriate court.
