Ethiopia has received an initial batch of Russian-made Su-35 fighter jets under an agreement covering 12 aircraft and four S-400 air-defense batteries, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on October 28, 2026.
Abiy thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for facilitating delivery a year ahead of schedule, describing the acquisition as a step towards strengthening national security and deterring aggression.
Accounts Differ on Number Delivered
Initial reports, including coverage by Ethiopia’s state news agency, said all 12 aircraft had arrived.
However, Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport subsequently said the first delivery consisted of two Su-35 jets. Updated reporting distinguished that initial shipment from the planned total of 12 aircraft.
The announcement coincided with Abiy’s visit to Moscow for the Russia-Africa Summit, where African leaders are discussing security and economic cooperation with Russia.
S-400 Systems to Follow
Ethiopia is also expected to receive four S-400 air-defense batteries. No delivery date, financial terms or deployment locations were disclosed.
The aircraft and missile systems form part of Addis Ababa’s effort to expand its military capabilities.
Acquisitions Amid Regional Tensions
The announcement comes as Ethiopian forces face renewed fighting in Tigray and an insurgency in neighboring Amhara.
Relations with Eritrea have also deteriorated. Ethiopia accuses its neighbor of supporting rebels, an allegation Eritrea denies.
The deliveries signal closer defense cooperation between Addis Ababa and Moscow, although the timetable for completing the wider arms package remains undisclosed.
