Ethiopian drones reportedly struck Eritrean troops near Adigrat in northern Tigray overnight on October 7–8, 2026, raising concerns about a wider regional conflict.
Conflict monitor ACLED said the attacks targeted Eritrean soldiers and ammunition. Witnesses reported explosions and damaged military vehicles, while one resident said troops appeared to be withdrawing north. That account did not establish the scale of any retreat.
The reported confrontation follows deteriorating relations between the neighbors, with Ethiopia accusing Eritrea of supporting rebels in Tigray. Eritrea, in turn, accuses Ethiopia of backing its opponents and seeking a pretext to seize access to the Red Sea.
Neither government had answered questions about the reported strikes at the time of the news report. No verified casualty figures were provided.
The escalation follows Ethiopia’s expulsion of 10 Eritrean diplomats and closure of its embassy in Asmara. Eritrea subsequently announced the severing of diplomatic relations.
The countries fought a border war between 1998 and 2000 before relations improved in 2018. Eritrean forces later supported Ethiopia’s government during the 2020–2022 Tigray war.
Their renewed confrontation adds uncertainty to a region still recovering from that conflict.
