The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old former convict for allegedly posing as a military officer and extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public in Ashaiman.
The suspect, identified as Bright Atsu Kudiabor, was apprehended at about 7:00 a.m. in an Ashaiman neighborhood popularly known as “I Shall Return.”
According to preliminary information, Kudiabor had allegedly presented himself as a member of the Ghana Armed Forces to intimidate individuals and obtain money from them. His activities reportedly raised suspicion among people in the area, leading to his interception.
Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service, with assistance from bystanders, reportedly restrained the suspect before handing him over to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation.
A search conducted on Kudiabor allegedly led to the recovery of a set of military camouflage uniforms. Investigators are examining the items as part of efforts to determine how long he had allegedly been impersonating a military officer and whether he had used the uniforms to commit other offences.
Police are also working to identify individuals who may have fallen victim to the alleged scheme. Members of the public who had previous encounters with the suspect may be invited to assist investigators with information.
Unauthorized possession or use of military clothing remains a serious security concern because it can enable criminals to gain public trust, intimidate victims and operate under the false appearance of state authority.
The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations. He is expected to be processed for court after the necessary inquiries have been completed.
The Tema Regional Police Command has urged residents to remain vigilant when dealing with people who claim to be members of the security services. The public has also been advised to request proper identification where necessary and report suspicious conduct to the nearest police station.
Police further encouraged anyone with information about individuals impersonating military, police or other security officers for financial gain to contact law enforcement authorities promptly.
The arrest highlights the importance of cooperation between security agencies and members of the public in preventing crime. Authorities said timely intervention by the fire officers and bystanders helped bring the situation under control and ensured that the suspect was handed over safely for investigation.
