The family of 29-year-old Douglas Acheampong has renewed calls for a thorough investigation into his death after he was allegedly shot by military personnel at a mining site in Akyem Hemang in the Eastern Region.
Relatives made the appeal on Friday, October 16, 2026, during a one-week observation held at the Akyem Hemang funeral grounds, urging the government and police to establish the circumstances of the shooting and bring those responsible to justice.
Acheampong reportedly died following an incident on August 26, 2026, at an alleged illegal mining site near Osino in the Fanteakwa South District. Witnesses and residents claim he was shot from behind at close range during a security operation by men they identified as soldiers. The identity and affiliation of those involved remain disputed.
The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has denied conducting an operation or deploying personnel to the area at the time of the incident.
Speaking at the observation, Acheampong’s mother, Akosua Henewaa, appealed for state intervention to ensure accountability for her son’s death.
Family head Oyokoa I Abusuapanyin Kwame Boakye also urged the Ghana Police Service to speed up its investigations, saying the family needed answers and justice.
The renewed appeal follows a protest by residents of Akyem Hemang and neighboring communities, including Gyampomani and Dome. Wearing red armbands, demonstrators marched approximately 10 kilometers to Osino, the district capital, where they presented a petition to Fanteakwa South District Chief Executive Mercy Korang.
The petition called for presidential and parliamentary investigations into the incident and the conduct of military personnel at mining sites in the area.
Residents also requested state support for Acheampong’s two young children, whose welfare has become a concern for the bereaved family.
