
The family of the late veteran Ghanaian diplomat and statesman, Ambassador James Victor Gbeho, has formally informed President John Dramani Mahama of his passing during a courtesy call held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
The visit was conducted in keeping with longstanding Ghanaian tradition and diplomatic protocol, under which the Head of State is officially notified of the death of a distinguished national figure before any broader public announcements or state arrangements are made.
Ambassador Gbeho passed away on June 13, 2026, at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy of distinguished service to Ghana, West Africa, and the international community.

Ambassador Gbeho held several prominent positions throughout his illustrious career, earning recognition as one of Ghana’s most accomplished diplomats and public servants.
He served as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, helping to shape the country’s foreign policy during a critical period in its political development. At the regional level, he also led the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, where he played an instrumental role in promoting integration and cooperation among member states.
His diplomatic credentials extended to the global arena, having represented Ghana as Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and later serving as the UN Special Representative for Somalia.
Beyond diplomacy, Ambassador Gbeho also contributed to national governance as a Member of Parliament for the Anlo Constituency, demonstrating a commitment to public service across multiple sectors.
He was also part of a distinguished cultural lineage as the son of Philip Gbeho, the renowned composer credited with arranging Ghana’s national anthem.
