Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative Meshack Malo has called for discussions at the 2026 World Food Forum Flagship Event to deliver tangible improvements in the lives of farmers and local communities.
Speaking at the gathering in Rome, Malo emphasized that the impact of global food policy discussions must extend beyond international meetings and reach the people whose livelihoods depend on agriculture.
He co-moderated the high-level World Food Day ceremony with Shalina Miah at the FAO headquarters under the theme “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.”
Discussions highlighted the need to make agricultural innovation accessible to smallholder farmers and marginalized populations. Participants stressed that new ideas and technologies should help address challenges within communities rather than remain confined to conference presentations.
The event also underscored the importance of combining traditional knowledge with scientific advances to build more resilient agrifood systems. Leaders encouraged approaches that draw on local experience while applying research and innovation to improve food production and access.
Strong local partnerships were identified as essential to translating international commitments into practical action. Discussions reaffirmed access to safe food as a fundamental human right and called for cooperation that places community needs at the center of efforts to strengthen food systems.
Malo’s message reinforced the need to judge progress by improvements on the ground, particularly among smallholder farmers and populations facing barriers to food security.
