More than 130 people have been arrested or detained in Ghana during an international crackdown on suspected scam operations, according to the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced on Thursday, October 8, 2026, that investigators had identified 89 victims and nearly $10 million in losses linked to the Ghana operation. Officers also seized more than 300 electronic devices.
Those taken into custody included human trafficking victims expected to be returned to their home countries. Their presence means the detention figures do not represent suspected offenders alone.
Patel said the action formed part of Operation Blackout, a wider campaign against scam compounds targeting Americans.
According to figures he provided, the global operation has resulted in approximately $17 billion in seizures, hundreds of arrests of alleged scammers and the release of thousands of trafficked workers.
He further said warnings issued to more than 10,000 Americans had helped prevent an estimated $670 million in losses.
Investigations into the Ghana operation remain ongoing. The FBI has not disclosed the identities of those arrested or detained or announced a timeline for completing its inquiries.
