Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has shut down the Italian Boy Lounge in Nungua-Kantamanto and arrested two staff members following a targeted enforcement operation linked to the alleged possession and sale of illicit drugs.
The crackdown forms part of an intensified nationwide campaign by regulators to curb substance abuse and eliminate the distribution of unapproved narcotics within nightlife and entertainment venues.
Enforcement Operation Conducted on July 3
The operation was carried out on Friday, July 3, 2026, as FDA officials conducted coordinated inspections across selected entertainment hotspots in Accra.
Authorities say the exercise is aimed at strengthening compliance within the hospitality sector and ensuring that licensed establishments are not used as channels for illegal drug activity.
Lounge Closed and Staff Arrested
During the raid, FDA enforcement officers moved to immediately shut down the Italian Boy Lounge, a well-known nightlife spot located in the Nungua-Kantamanto area.
Two staff members were arrested at the scene and taken into custody to assist with ongoing investigations. Officials are working to determine the origin of the suspected substances and identify any wider distribution networks linked to the establishment.
Wider Crackdown Across Accra Nightlife Venues
The Italian Boy Lounge was not the only establishment affected during the operation.
In a parallel enforcement action, FDA officers also shut down the nearby Liquid Zero Pub, where additional individuals were reportedly arrested on similar suspicions related to drug possession and distribution.
Authorities described the coordinated raids as part of a broader effort to disrupt illegal activity within entertainment zones that are increasingly being monitored for compliance violations.
FDA Warns Nightlife Operators
The FDA has repeatedly warned bar and nightclub operators that allowing their premises to be used for illegal drug transactions constitutes a serious breach of public safety regulations.
Officials stressed that establishments found to be in violation risk immediate closure, prosecution, and possible revocation of operating licences.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring that nightlife venues do not become hubs for narcotics distribution or substance abuse.
