Ghana Premier League club Karela United has been prohibited from registering new players after failing to settle an outstanding financial obligation owed to former player Sana Camara.
The immediate sanction was communicated by FIFA in a letter dated August 17, 2026, and issued through the world governing body’s Legal Portal.
Signed by FIFA Head of Disciplinary Américo Espallargas, the correspondence referred to an earlier ruling under case number FPSD-23160, which directed Karela United to meet its financial obligations to Camara.
FIFA said the club had not complied with that decision, resulting in the activation of the registration restriction.
Ban Covers Domestic and International Registrations
The sanction prevents Karela United from registering new players at both national and international levels.
This means the club cannot complete the registration of new signings through the Ghana Football Association or FIFA’s international transfer system while the restriction remains active.
Although commonly described as a transfer ban, the punishment specifically concerns player registration. The club may negotiate agreements with players, but it cannot register them to participate in official competitions during the affected period.
The restriction could create significant difficulties for Karela United as it prepares its squad for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.
Debt Must Be Paid for Ban to Be Lifted
FIFA stated that the ban would remain active until the amount owed to Camara had been paid in full.
The sanction can continue for a maximum of three complete and consecutive registration periods. It could, however, be lifted earlier if Karela United settles the outstanding obligation in accordance with the original ruling.
The amount owed to the former player was not disclosed in the FIFA correspondence reviewed by several Ghanaian media organizations.
Resolving the financial dispute quickly would allow the club to request the removal of the restriction and resume registering players.
GFA Directed to Enforce Sanction
FIFA has formally instructed the Ghana Football Association to implement the ban at the domestic level if it has not already done so.
The directive ensures that Karela United cannot bypass the international restriction by registering players exclusively through the national football system.
The GFA is responsible for preventing the club from adding new players to its official squad until FIFA confirms that the sanction has been lifted or the maximum applicable period has elapsed.
Squad-Building Plans Face Disruption
The timing of the decision presents an administrative and sporting challenge for Karela United ahead of the new domestic campaign.
The club is scheduled to begin the season with an away match against FC Samartex and has been working to strengthen its squad before the competition starts.
Any players signed but not registered before the ban took effect may be unable to represent the club in official fixtures unless the financial matter is resolved and FIFA removes the restriction.
The situation may also force Karela United to depend on players who were properly registered before the sanction was activated.
Club Engaging FIFA Over Dispute
Karela United has indicated that it is engaging the appropriate FIFA adjudicatory body in an effort to resolve the matter amicably.
Until the process is completed or the debt is fully settled, the registration freeze remains in force.
The case highlights the consequences clubs can face when they fail to comply with financial decisions involving players. FIFA routinely uses registration bans to compel clubs to honor contractual and financial obligations established through its dispute-resolution system.
Karela United must now resolve the obligation to Camara if it wants to regain full access to the transfer market before the maximum three-period sanction runs its course.
