The Ministry of Finance has granted financial clearance for the construction of the Samenya–New Town road and the reconstruction of the Ankobra Bridge in the Western Region.
The projects, covering the Jomoro and Ellembelle constituencies, are intended to improve transport links, support cross-border trade and ease travel difficulties faced by farming and fishing communities.
The approval follows stakeholder consultations and a technical review of the budget requirements for the works.
The Samenya–New Town road project will involve engineering works, tarring and upgrading a route connecting local trading communities to Ghana’s southwestern border with Côte d’Ivoire.
The Ankobra Bridge project will focus on rebuilding the crossing over the Ankobra River to address concerns about its deteriorating condition and safety.
Both projects are expected to improve access to markets, particularly for cocoa, coconut and cashew farmers in the two constituencies. Better transport connections are also intended to support security operations along the border corridors.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways will oversee implementation through the Department of Urban Roads and the Ghana Highway Authority.
Under the proposed execution timetable, competitive procurement is to be expedited within the month to enable the selection of contractors and preparation for construction.
Formal notification of the financial clearance has been sent to the Ministry of Roads and Highways to advance the necessary implementation arrangements.
