A devastating fire has destroyed a girls’ dormitory block at Wa Islamic Senior High School in the Wa Metropolis of the Upper West Region.
The incident occurred during the late hours of Sunday, August 2, 2026, causing extensive damage to the students’ accommodation and personal belongings.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service responded to the emergency with two fire tenders and immediately began efforts to control the blaze.
The firefighters managed to confine the flames to the affected dormitory and prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining school buildings.
Despite the successful containment, the affected students lost nearly all their personal belongings and essential educational materials.
Items destroyed included textbooks, exercise books, beds, mattresses, clothing and food provisions. The extent of the losses is expected to severely affect the students as academic activities continue.
No deaths were reported in connection with the incident. Preliminary information indicates that most of the female students were attending evening classes when the fire started, reducing the likelihood of casualties.
Authorities had yet to establish the cause of the fire, and investigations were expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the outbreak.
The incident has generated concern among parents, school authorities and community members, particularly because the institution has reportedly experienced similar fires in its residential facilities in previous years.
Some stakeholders have called for a comprehensive assessment of the school’s electrical installations, fire-safety systems and emergency-response arrangements.
Attention is also expected to turn towards providing temporary accommodation and replacing the educational materials and personal supplies lost by the affected students.
The school administration and emergency authorities are expected to provide further information after completing an assessment of the damage.
