A fire outbreak has severely damaged sections of the four-story SIC Insurance PLC building in Takoradi, destroying several offices and the studio of New Day TV.
The blaze reportedly started shortly after 9:00 a.m. and is believed to have originated from the television station’s studio before spreading to other parts of the commercial building.
Occupants and staff initially attempted to contain the flames with portable fire extinguishers. However, the fire intensified rapidly and overwhelmed their efforts, forcing them to seek emergency assistance from the Ghana National Fire Service.
Firefighters subsequently arrived at the scene with multiple fire tenders and launched an operation to prevent the flames from spreading throughout the building and to nearby properties.
The fire was eventually brought under control, but several offices, equipment and other property had already suffered extensive damage. The New Day TV studio was among the facilities most severely affected.
No deaths or serious injuries have been reported. Occupants were able to leave the affected sections of the building as emergency personnel worked to secure the area.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Fire officers and other relevant authorities are expected to inspect the building to determine where and how the blaze started.
An assessment is also underway to determine the full extent and financial value of the damage to the offices, television equipment and other property within the building.
The incident has renewed concerns about fire safety in multi-story commercial buildings and the need for functional extinguishers, alarm systems, accessible emergency exits and regular evacuation exercises.
