Five people sustained gunshot wounds after armed robbers separately attacked two VIP JEOUN Transport buses on major highways in Ghana.
The incidents occurred between the night of Wednesday, July 30, 2026, and the early hours of Thursday, July 31, 2026. The targeted buses were travelling on the Accra–Kumasi and Kumasi–Sunyani highways.
The first attack reportedly happened at about 11:00 p.m. on a section of the Accra–Kumasi Highway between Apedwa Junction and Akyem Asafo.
According to reports, the armed men used a vehicle to block the road before opening fire on a VIP bus travelling from Accra to Sunyani. The driver, his assistant and three passengers sustained gunshot injuries during the attack.
Personnel from the Suhum Divisional Police Command responded to the incident and exchanged gunfire with the suspected robbers before clearing the highway for motorists.
The injured victims were taken for medical treatment, while the driver was later transferred to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for specialized care.
About two hours later, at approximately 1:00 a.m., another VIP bus was attacked near Potrikrom on the Kumasi–Sunyani Highway.
The suspected robbers fired at the bus, shattering its windscreen. However, an armed security officer travelling on the coach immediately returned fire, forcing the attackers to abandon the operation and escape into nearby bushes.
No passenger or crew member was reported injured in the second incident.
VIP JEOUN Transport subsequently issued a statement confirming both attacks and called on security agencies to strengthen nighttime patrols along major highways.
The company said improved security was urgently needed to protect passengers, drivers and other motorists using Ghana’s long-distance routes, particularly during late-night and early-morning travel.
