The Asokore Mampong District Court has remanded five suspects for the second time in connection with the alleged mob killing of 27-year-old Yusuf Zakari at Sabon Zongo in Kumasi.
The court’s decision on August 7, 2026, was followed by a tense confrontation outside the courtroom, where relatives of the deceased and family members of the accused exchanged insults before the dispute escalated into a physical altercation.
Five Suspects Remain in Custody
The accused persons are Moses Adoko, 37; Abubakari Adams, 25; Nurudeen Suleman, 35; Mohammed Amadu, 21; and Halidu Issaka, 22.
They are being held in connection with the death of Zakari, who was allegedly attacked by a mob at a cattle kraal on July 19, 2026. He had reportedly been accused of stealing GH¢4,800.
Zakari sustained serious injuries during the assault and was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Prosecution Seeks Additional Suspects
Leading the prosecution, Chief Inspector Gifty Asante asked the court to extend the suspects’ detention to allow investigators more time to locate and arrest other alleged accomplices who remain at large.
Lawyers for the accused argued that their clients did not pose a flight risk and should not remain in custody. However, the court, presided over by Her Ladyship Mrs. Hilder Esther Wryter, rejected the defence application and remanded the five suspects again.
They are expected to return to court on August 24, 2026.
Families Clash Outside Courtroom
Tensions erupted shortly after the proceedings ended. Relatives and supporters of Zakari displayed placards demanding justice for his death, while members of the suspects’ families gathered outside the court.
A verbal exchange between the two groups reportedly became heated and developed into a physical confrontation. Court security personnel intervened and restored order before the situation could escalate further.
Security Operations Intensified
The alleged killing has heightened concerns about mob violence and vigilante justice in the Ashanti Region.
In response, the Asokore Mampong Municipal Security Council deployed armed police officers and military personnel to the Kan Bola area, where the incident reportedly occurred.
The security operation included the demolition of suspected criminal hideouts and unauthorized structures as authorities sought to restore calm and prevent further violence.
Investigations are continuing as police work to identify and arrest the remaining suspects connected to Zakari’s death.
