Defeated Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro arrived in Miami with his family on Wednesday, October 28, after leaving Brazil amid a dispute over his election loss and a Supreme Court order requiring him to surrender his passports.
The senator travelled through Argentina and Ecuador before reaching Florida. The Trump administration had granted entry visas to him and his family.
Departure Amid Passport Restrictions
Bolsonaro’s departure followed a court-imposed deadline to hand over his travel documents.
Brazilian reporting indicated that he used an Italian passport to enter Argentina before continuing towards the United States. Argentine authorities said the family presented valid documentation and faced no legal impediment to entering Argentina.
The Brazilian court had also ordered the surrender of passports issued by other countries.
Bolsonaro Challenges Result Without Evidence
After arriving, Bolsonaro published a letter describing himself as the elected president before replacing it with a version calling himself Brazil’s rightful leader.
He alleged that the election had been stolen but provided no supporting evidence. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won by more than four million votes, and his victory was recognised by Brazil’s electoral authorities, international observers and Bolsonaro’s own party.
The departure has intensified political tensions following the runoff, with Bolsonaro continuing to challenge an outcome accepted by the institutions responsible for overseeing the vote.
His arrival in Florida also recalls his father Jair Bolsonaro’s departure for the United States after losing the 2022 presidential election.
