Beyond congestion, Mr. Shaib expressed concern over the deteriorating state of the road, describing the infrastructure as unsafe and in urgent need of rehabilitation.
Recent heavy rains have exposed major weaknesses along the corridor, with flooding submerging sections of the highway and leaving behind deep potholes that pose serious risks to motorists.
He attributed part of the problem to delayed drainage construction projects, which have prevented stormwater from flowing freely during periods of heavy rainfall.
According to the MP, the combination of poor drainage, damaged road surfaces, and stagnant floodwaters has significantly reduced the efficiency of one of Ghana’s most important highways.
Poor Lighting Raises Safety Concerns
Mr. Shaib also highlighted the absence of functional streetlights along portions of the highway, saying inadequate lighting has increased the risk of road accidents and criminal activity during nighttime hours.
He stressed that restoring proper illumination is essential to improving road safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
The MP noted that better lighting would also enhance visibility for emergency responders and reduce hazards caused by damaged sections of the roadway.
Appeal to Key Government Ministries
To address the growing challenges, Mr. Shaib has appealed to the Ministry of Works and Housing to expedite ongoing drainage construction projects to help reduce flooding along the corridor.
He also called on the Ministry of Roads and Highways to immediately repair the damaged road surface, fill dangerous potholes, and restore street lighting to improve safety and traffic flow.
The MP argued that coordinated action by the two ministries is necessary to provide both immediate relief and long-term solutions for residents and commuters.
Calls for Transparency in Flood Relief Spending
In addition to infrastructure improvements, Mr. Shaib urged the government to ensure transparency and accountability in the utilization of the GH¢350 million allocated for flood relief and mitigation efforts.
He emphasized that residents expect the funds to be used efficiently for projects that directly address flooding, road rehabilitation, drainage expansion, and other critical infrastructure needs in affected communities.
According to the MP, the public deserves regular updates on how the funds are being allocated and the progress of projects intended to reduce the impact of future floods.
Residents Hope for Swift Action
For many residents of Weija, Mallam, and surrounding communities, the deteriorating condition of the highway has become a daily burden, affecting livelihoods, increasing vehicle maintenance costs, and extending travel times.
Mr. Shaib believes that prompt government intervention will not only ease congestion but also improve road safety, reduce flooding, and restore confidence in one of the country’s most critical transportation corridors.
With the rainy season underway, residents are hoping that the government’s response will move beyond promises and deliver lasting infrastructure improvements that will benefit commuters for years to come.
