A 67-year-old food vendor, Ama Forson, has regained her freedom after spending four years and seven months in prison for a drug offence she was later found not to have committed.
Ms Forson was initially sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted in connection with illicit drugs allegedly found among her belongings.
According to reports, the drugs had been hidden among her belongings by a customer shortly before the arrival of the police. She was subsequently arrested, prosecuted and convicted.
Throughout the case, Ms Forson maintained her innocence and challenged the conviction.
Following an appeal and further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the case, she was eventually acquitted after it was established that she was not responsible for the drugs.
Her acquittal has brought an end to her prolonged incarceration and allowed her to return to her family and community.
However, her release comes after she lost more than four years of her life behind bars, despite maintaining that she was innocent.
While the acquittal restores her freedom, it cannot return the years she spent in prison or fully undo the personal and financial consequences of being separated from her family, livelihood and everyday life.
