Former Haitian President Michel Martelly has submitted documents to contest the country’s upcoming presidential election, marking a bid to return to the office he held from 2011 to 2016.
Martelly visited the Provisional Electoral Council’s offices on Friday, October 23, 2026, after completing an online registration. Three lawyers accompanied him, while hundreds of supporters gathered as he presented the required paperwork.
He is seeking the presidency under Debloke, a political coalition that includes former members of his previous party, PHTK. The general elections are scheduled for December 13.
Submitting his application does not automatically secure Martelly a place on the ballot. His file remains subject to review and validation by the electoral council.
Sixteen presidential hopefuls had registered at the time of reporting, with the council extending the candidate registration deadline to October 31.
The electoral preparations are taking place amid persistent gang violence, raising concerns about whether voters will be able to register and safely reach polling stations. If held as scheduled, the vote would be Haiti’s first general election in more than a decade.
