The Ghana Police Service has arrested four suspects in connection with the robbery of gold bullion valued at GH¢94.5 million at Wassa Akropong in the Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region.
The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation conducted by personnel from the Western Regional Police Command after an armed gang allegedly intercepted a secure convoy transporting refined gold belonging to a mining company operating in the area.
According to preliminary information, the robbers were heavily armed when they attacked the convoy and made away with gold bullion blocks estimated to be worth GH¢94.5 million.
Police immediately launched an investigation and began tracking the movements of individuals suspected of participating in the operation. Intelligence gathered during the exercise reportedly led officers to a hideout within the Wassa enclave.
During a raid on the location, police arrested four people and recovered a substantial quantity of the stolen gold. Officers also seized illegal firearms, ammunition and specialized cutting equipment believed to have been used during the robbery.
The suspects remain in police custody and are assisting investigators with efforts to establish their individual roles in the heist and identify other members of the gang.
Police have temporarily withheld the suspects’ names to avoid compromising ongoing operations to arrest their alleged accomplices, who are currently on the run.
Investigators are also expected to determine how the gang obtained information about the gold consignment, including its value, transportation route and security arrangements.
The Police Administration commended the Western Regional Police Command for its swift response and tactical handling of the operation.
The Ghana Police Service assured the public that efforts are underway to retrieve the remaining stolen gold and bring all other individuals connected to the robbery to justice.
