At least four people have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident involving a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus on the Peki stretch in Ghana’s Volta Region on Sunday, June 21.
The bus, which was travelling from Accra to Dambai, reportedly veered off the roadway and plunged into a ditch, leaving multiple passengers dead and several others injured.
According to preliminary reports, there were 28 occupants on board the vehicle, including the driver and the driver’s mate, at the time of the crash. Four passengers have so far been confirmed dead, while a number of others sustained injuries of varying severity.
Among those involved in the accident were two pregnant women, one believed to have been six months pregnant and the other approximately five months pregnant. Both women were among the injured and are receiving medical attention alongside other survivors.
Health officials have indicated that two of the injured victims remain in critical condition and are undergoing urgent treatment at nearby medical facilities.
Emergency responders and security personnel quickly arrived at the scene to carry out rescue operations, assist trapped passengers, and transport the injured to hospitals for specialized care.
Authorities have yet to establish the exact cause of the accident. Investigations are expected to determine what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle before it veered off the road and crashed into the ditch.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over road safety in Ghana and underscores the need for continued enforcement of traffic regulations and measures aimed at preventing fatal crashes on the country’s highways.
