Four Salvadoran Soldiers Missing After Gang Ambush in Haiti

Four Salvadoran soldiers remain unaccounted for after armed gang members attacked their armored vehicle in Haiti, dealing a significant blow to the United Nations-backed Gang Suppression Force.

The ambush occurred on Sunday, October 18, 2026, in Croix-des-Bouquets, northeast of Port-au-Prince, where gangs including 400 Mawozo and Kraze Barye maintain a strong presence.

The missing personnel, identified as aviation technicians attached to the international security mission, escaped after attackers opened fire and used explosives to set their vehicle ablaze. Contact with them was subsequently lost.

Heavy fighting has prevented rescue teams from reaching the area by land or air, leaving the soldiers’ whereabouts uncertain. There has been no confirmation that they were captured.

The incident is described as the largest attack against the Gang Suppression Force since it began operations approximately six months ago. The mission has reported a sharp increase in hostile encounters involving international troops, with incidents rising from two to 15 within a month.

Authorized by the U.N. Security Council in September 2025, the force replaced the Kenyan-led security mission, which had struggled with inadequate funding and equipment.

The new mission has just over 2,000 personnel deployed, including contingents from Chad, Jamaica, Guatemala and El Salvador. However, resource shortages continue to hamper its efforts to confront gangs estimated to control about 70 per cent of the Haitian capital.

Security analysts view the ambush as an attempt by armed groups to demonstrate their ability to challenge the international deployment. They have also raised concerns that the soldiers could be used to pressure authorities if they are being held captive, although their status remains unknown.

The attack comes as Haiti prepares for its first general elections in more than a decade. U.N. special envoy Carlos Ruiz Massieu has pointed to progress in the political process, but the latest violence underscores the security challenges facing the country.
