The Gambia began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Somalia on Friday, September 25, 2026.
The Group C encounter was played at the Independence Stadium in Bakau, with the Scorpions securing all three points after overcoming a second-half equaliser from Somalia.
The result gives The Gambia a winning start ahead of their next Group C fixture against Ghana in Accra on September 29. CAF’s official schedule confirms the fixture as the second matchday encounter.
Colley Gives Gambia Early Lead
The Gambia took the lead in the first half after being awarded a penalty.
Ebrima Colley stepped up and converted the spot-kick to put the Scorpions 1-0 ahead.
The hosts were unable to extend their advantage, however, allowing Somalia to remain in contention as the match progressed.
Somalia Fight Back
Somalia eventually found an equaliser in the second half through Bilal Njie, bringing the score to 1-1 and putting pressure on the Gambian side.
With the match appearing to be heading towards a draw, The Gambia responded late in the contest.
Badamosi Delivers Late Winner
Substitute Muhammed Badamosi emerged as the match-winner when he headed home in the 83rd minute to restore The Gambia’s lead.
The late goal sparked celebrations among the home supporters and ensured that the Scorpions opened their qualifying campaign with maximum points.
Gambia Turn Attention to Ghana
The victory gives The Gambia three points in Group C, which also features Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
Côte d’Ivoire began the campaign with a 2-0 victory over Ghana in Bouaké on September 24, meaning the opening results have already created an early battle for position in the group.
The Gambia will next travel to Accra to face Ghana on September 29, while Somalia will host Côte d’Ivoire on the same day.
The 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign features 48 nations divided into 12 groups. Teams will play six group matches, with the top two sides from groups without co-hosts qualifying for the finals. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
