GCB Bank has denied reports that a robbery or attempted robbery occurred at its Labone branch in Accra, assuring customers that the facility remains secure and fully operational.
The bank issued the clarification after the Ghana Police Service initially announced on Thursday, August 13, 2026, that officers had foiled an attempted robbery at the branch. The police statement indicated that two suspects were killed and another arrested during an exchange of gunfire.
In a swift response, GCB Bank disputed the suggestion that criminals had attacked or entered its premises.
“At no point was the branch breached, and no customer, member of staff, funds, or property of the Bank was affected,” management said in a statement.
The bank assured customers that the Labone branch was safe and operating normally, urging the public to continue conducting transactions without fear.
Management added that GCB Bank maintains strong security measures across its facilities and is working closely with the appropriate authorities while monitoring developments surrounding the incident.
Following the bank’s denial, the Ghana Police Service released an updated situational report providing further details about the security operation.
According to the revised account, police received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. that a suspected robbery syndicate was preparing to attack three banks within the Labone enclave—GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank.
Officers were subsequently deployed to the area, where they reportedly spotted members of the gang in two vehicles parked near the financial institutions.
The suspects allegedly attempted to escape after noticing the police presence. One of the vehicles sped away, leading officers on a pursuit that resulted in the arrest of Augustine Okechuku Maazi.
Police said occupants of the second vehicle opened fire on officers while attempting to flee. Two suspects were killed during the resulting exchange of gunfire.
A Toyota Highlander, a Hyundai Tucson and a blow pistol were reportedly recovered during the operation.
Although the police intervention disrupted an alleged plan to attack banks in the Labone area, the updated account confirmed that no criminals entered GCB Bank’s premises and no customers, employees, money or property were affected.
