The Ghana Education Service has released the outstanding 2023 Capitation Grant to District Education Directorates for onward transfer to public basic schools across the country.
In a letter dated September 14, 2026, GES management said the funds had been deposited into the respective district accounts and must be disbursed to beneficiary schools without delay.
Regional Directors of Education have been directed to ensure that the money reaches schools on or before the reopening of the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year.
The Service explained that the directive would enable heads of basic schools to access the funds needed to manage their institutions and begin the academic year without avoidable operational difficulties.
The transfers to District Education Directorates include the Sports and Culture allocations intended for district offices. The corresponding Regional Sports and Culture components have been paid into the designated accounts of the Regional Education Offices.
“Regional Directors are therefore by this letter requested to ensure that the funds are transferred to the schools on or before the reopening of the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year to enable Heads of Basic Schools to operate seamlessly,” GES stated.
A monitoring team from the Service’s headquarters will visit the regions to assess whether the money has been transferred as directed.
Regional and district officials have consequently been urged to complete the disbursement immediately and maintain the necessary records for accountability.
The Capitation Grant supports the day-to-day management of public basic schools. It is used for approved activities such as procuring teaching and learning materials, undertaking minor repairs and meeting other essential school-level expenses.
School administrators are expected to use the money prudently and comply with the official guidelines governing the grant.
The release is expected to ease some of the financial pressures experienced by headteachers, particularly those who have struggled to finance basic administrative and operational needs while awaiting the outstanding allocation.
