The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has formally appointed experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of Ghana’s senior men’s national football team, the Black Stars.
Queiroz takes charge following the departure of Otto Addo, assuming responsibility for guiding the national team into its next competitive cycle after Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
The appointment brings one of international football’s most experienced coaches to the Black Stars, with Queiroz having managed several national teams and some of Europe’s biggest clubs during a coaching career spanning decades.
Ghana’s 2026 World Cup Campaign
Queiroz’s arrival comes after Ghana navigated a challenging Group L at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars opened their campaign in Toronto with a crucial 1-0 victory over Panama, giving Ghana an important three points in the battle to reach the knockout phase.
Their second group match produced an impressive defensive performance as Ghana held England to a goalless draw in Foxborough.
The Black Stars then suffered their first defeat of the tournament in Philadelphia, losing 2-1 to Croatia in their final group fixture.
Despite that setback, Ghana accumulated enough points to advance from the group and secure a place in the Round of 32.
The Black Stars’ tournament eventually came to an end against Colombia, who recorded a narrow 1-0 victory at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
Ghana’s run to the knockout stage represented another chapter in the country’s World Cup history and provided the foundation for the next phase of the national team’s development.
Queiroz Brings Vast International Experience
The GFA’s decision to turn to Queiroz gives the Black Stars a coach with extensive experience managing at the highest level of international football.
The Portuguese tactician has previously coached national teams including South Africa, Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar and Oman.
His World Cup experience is particularly extensive.
Queiroz has now become only the second head coach in football history to lead national teams at five consecutive FIFA World Cup final tournaments, having previously been in charge of Portugal in 2010 and Iran at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions before his involvement with Ghana in 2026.
His lengthy international career has given him experience working across Europe, Africa, Asia and South America and managing teams under very different footballing cultures and competitive environments.
Real Madrid and Manchester United Experience
Queiroz’s résumé also includes significant experience at some of Europe’s most prominent clubs.
He previously served as head coach of Spanish giants Real Madrid and Portuguese club Sporting CP.
The Portuguese coach is also widely known for his two spells as assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
During his time at Old Trafford, Queiroz played an important role in Ferguson’s coaching staff as Manchester United competed for major domestic and European honors.
His background in elite club football, combined with decades of international management, makes him one of the most decorated and experienced foreign coaches to take responsibility for Ghana’s senior national team.
New Era for the Black Stars
Queiroz now faces the task of building on Ghana’s 2026 World Cup experience while preparing the Black Stars for upcoming continental and international competitions.
Attention will be placed on integrating emerging players with established internationals, strengthening tactical consistency and developing a squad capable of competing against Africa’s leading national teams.
His appointment also signals the GFA’s intention to place considerable international coaching experience at the center of the Black Stars’ rebuilding process.
Expectations will inevitably be high given Queiroz’s résumé and Ghana’s status as a four-time African champion.
For the Portuguese tactician, the Black Stars represent another major assignment in a remarkable international coaching career.
For Ghana, his appointment begins a new chapter for the senior national team, with the focus now turning to converting the promise shown during the 2026 World Cup into sustained success on the African and global stages.
