The Ghana Football Association has identified the Black Stars’ poor results as the main reason Carlos Queiroz stepped down as head coach.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum confirmed that the association and the Portuguese coach parted ways by mutual agreement. According to him, Queiroz acknowledged that the team’s recent performances were unacceptable and decided to leave.
His departure followed consecutive defeats at the start of Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The Black Stars lost 2–0 away to Côte d’Ivoire before surrendering a two-goal lead in a 4–2 home defeat to The Gambia in Accra.
The results left Ghana bottom of Group C and increased pressure on the technical team to reverse the national side’s struggles.
Queiroz’s second spell lasted less than a month. Across his time in charge of Ghana, the 73-year-old recorded one victory, two draws and four defeats in seven matches.
Beyond the results, Asante Twum said the coach had expressed frustration over the country’s football infrastructure, particularly the absence of a dedicated, high-quality training base for the national team.
Queiroz was concerned about players training on the same stadium pitches used for competitive matches, believing the arrangement affected the condition of the playing surfaces and undermined preparation.
The GFA has constituted a five-member committee to identify a replacement. It is expected to submit its recommendations to the Ministry of Youth and Sports by October 9, 2026.
The search comes ahead of Ghana’s back-to-back qualifiers against Somalia in November, as the Black Stars seek to revive their campaign.
