The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has shut down and sealed four Chinese-owned mattress manufacturing companies in Afienya near Tema for allegedly producing substandard mattresses using hazardous and unapproved materials.
The enforcement exercise, carried out on May 18, 2026, followed investigations and laboratory tests conducted by the regulatory authority, which revealed that the companies were substituting medically approved foam materials with industrial packaging substances not intended for human bedding.
The companies affected by the closure include Yin Yuan Jia Limited, also identified in some reports as Jin Yuan Jia Limited, Mooda Limited, producers of Moonda mattresses, Hue Sheng Company, producers of Kalusini mattresses, and Asano Service.
According to GSA Regional Manager Clement Kubati, surveillance operations uncovered the use of hazardous polystyrene and polyethylene materials in mattress production instead of approved polyurethane foam.
Kubati explained that polystyrene is typically designed for appliance packaging and industrial cushioning rather than bedding products intended for prolonged human use.
Regulators warned that the use of such materials could expose consumers to serious health risks, including spinal and back-related complications as well as potential toxicity concerns.
The GSA further disclosed that some company managers were arrested after allegedly defying previous closure and compliance directives issued by the authority.
Officials say the crackdown forms part of broader efforts to enforce manufacturing standards, protect public health, and eliminate substandard consumer products from the Ghanaian market.
