Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has dismissed as false and misleading claims circulating on social media that sewage has contaminated the country’s public drinking water supply.
The utility company said investigations conducted by its technical team found no evidence to support the allegations and assured the public that Ghana’s treated water remains safe for consumption.
Viral Video Sparks Public Concern
The clarification follows the circulation of a viral video alleging that a damaged Ghana Water Limited pipeline had been submerged in an overflowing underground sewage chamber, allowing wastewater to leak into the country’s potable water distribution system.
The video triggered widespread concern among consumers, with many questioning the safety of tap water supplied by the utility provider.
Investigation Finds No Evidence of Contamination
In a statement issued on July 13, 2026, Ghana Water Limited said it immediately deployed engineers and technical experts to inspect the location featured in the video.
According to the company, the inspection established that the pipeline shown in the footage does not belong to GWL.
Instead, officials explained that the structure is part of a trunk sewer inlet system designed to convey municipal wastewater into a dedicated sewage collection chamber.
The investigation also found that there was no drinking water pipeline inside the sewage chamber and no burst or exposed GWL water pipes in the vicinity that could have resulted in contamination.
GWL Reassures the Public
Ghana Water Limited stressed that its potable water distribution network is completely separate from the country’s sewerage infrastructure, making cross-contamination highly unlikely.
The company explained that strict engineering standards are followed to ensure that drinking water pipelines and sewage systems operate independently.
Public Relations Officer Stanley Martey further assured consumers that all water supplied by GWL undergoes comprehensive treatment, continuous laboratory testing, and routine quality monitoring before it reaches households.
According to him, the water supplied by the company consistently complies with the safety standards established by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA).
Consumers Urged to Rely on Verified Information
Ghana Water Limited has urged the public to disregard the viral claims and avoid sharing unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic.
The company encouraged consumers to rely on official communication channels for accurate updates regarding water quality and assured residents that tap water supplied through its network remains safe for domestic use.
