Ghana Water Limited has announced plans to begin spilling excess water from the Weija Dam on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following a sharp rise in the reservoir’s level.
The utility has consequently issued an urgent evacuation warning to residents living in low-lying and flood-prone communities downstream of the dam.
According to GWL, sustained heavy rainfall upstream and within the catchment areas of the Densu River and its tributaries has pushed the reservoir level to 45.2 feet. The figure is approaching the dam’s maximum safe operational threshold of 46 feet.
GWL explained that the controlled spillage is necessary to protect the structural integrity of the dam and prevent an uncontrolled overflow or possible failure that could endanger lives and property.
Communities identified as being at risk include Tetegu, Oblogo, Lower Weija, Lower McCarthy Hill, the Pambros Salt enclave, Ada Kopey, Bojo Beach and adjoining settlements.
Residents in these areas have been advised to move to safer locations before the spill gates are opened. The company also urged the public to remain vigilant and comply with evacuation instructions from emergency authorities.
Ghana Water called on the National Disaster Management Organization, municipal and district assemblies, traditional leaders, assembly members and residents’ associations to activate their emergency response and evacuation plans immediately.
The utility said it would continue monitoring reservoir levels and provide periodic updates on the spillage and other operational developments.
Residents have been cautioned against remaining close to riverbanks or attempting to cross flooded roads and waterways during the exercise.
