Ghana Welcomes Home Emmanuel Akowuah Asamoah Who Was Abuse By South Africans (xenophobic)

Ghanaian return back from South Africa

Emmanuel Akowuah Asamoah has safely returned to Accra following a government-sponsored evacuation from South Africa after he was reportedly attacked during recent xenophobic tensions in the country.

Mr. Asamoah arrived in Ghana on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, after the Ghanaian government intervened to facilitate his relocation and ensure his safety.

His return follows a viral incident in April 2026 in which he was allegedly attacked and harassed by anti-foreigner vigilantes while working at his salon in South Africa. The incident sparked widespread concern among Ghanaians both at home and abroad.

According to Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the government decided to fully sponsor Mr. Asamoah’s evacuation, relocation, and resettlement expenses as part of efforts to protect Ghanaian citizens facing threats abroad.

The minister stated that the intervention was necessary due to the growing xenophobic climate and safety concerns affecting some foreign nationals in South Africa.

Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Anani Quashie, personally accompanied Mr. Asamoah on the flight back to Ghana.

Upon arrival at the Kotoka International Airport, he was officially received by Harold Agyeman and other officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Asamoah expressed gratitude to the Ghanaian government for what he described as a swift and compassionate response during a difficult period.

He said he was relieved to be back home safely and looked forward to reuniting with his family in a peaceful environment.

Meanwhile, Minister Ablakwa has announced that any other Ghanaians currently residing in South Africa who wish to return home because of ongoing xenophobic tensions can contact Ghana’s High Commission for state-funded evacuation assistance.

The government’s intervention comes amid renewed concerns over attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, where sporadic anti-immigrant violence has periodically affected African migrants and business owners.
