A promising Ghanaian first-class graduate, Mercy Yaaba Bredu, has died in China after collapsing shortly after arriving in the country to pursue a master’s degree.
Bredu’s death occurred just two days after she left Ghana to begin what was expected to be a significant new chapter in her academic and professional journey.
She departed from Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Monday, August 24, 2026, at about 1:30 p.m. Members of her family and close friends accompanied her to the airport to see her off before she boarded the flight to China.
The journey was intended to mark the beginning of her postgraduate studies after years of academic achievement in Ghana. However, reports from fellow travelers and colleagues indicated that Bredu began experiencing severe pain in her chest and around her heart during the flight.
Despite the discomfort, she reportedly completed the journey and arrived at her destination in China. Shortly after landing, she was welcomed at the airport terminal with a bouquet of flowers.
The joyful reception suddenly turned into an emergency when Bredu collapsed while receiving the flowers.
People at the airport immediately called for medical assistance, and emergency personnel transported her to a nearby hospital. Doctors placed her under intensive care and made several attempts to resuscitate and stabilize her condition.
Despite the medical interventions, Bredu died on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, only two days after departing Ghana.
The specific medical condition responsible for her death has not been officially established in the available accounts. Reports have only indicated that she suffered severe chest and heart pain during the journey before collapsing at the airport.
Bredu was widely regarded as a brilliant and ambitious young woman with a promising future. She graduated with first-class honors from the University of Education, Winneba, demonstrating exceptional academic ability throughout her studies.

Bredu reportedly secured competitive scholarship offers to pursue further studies in both the United States and China. After considering the opportunities available to her, she selected China as the destination for her master’s program.
