Ghanaian legal practitioner Nania Owusu-Ankomah has been appointed Vice President of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) Court, marking a major milestone for Ghana’s legal and arbitration community on the global stage.
Her appointment officially takes effect on May 20, 2026.
The announcement was made by LCIA Director General Kevin Nash and Court President Maxi Scherer, who praised Owusu-Ankomah’s leadership, professionalism, and longstanding contribution to international commercial dispute resolution.
Owusu-Ankomah currently serves as a senior partner at Bentsi-Enchill, Letsa & Ankomah, one of Ghana’s leading law firms, where she specializes in international arbitration and cross-border litigation.
She is dual-qualified to practice law in both Ghana and United Kingdom under the England and Wales legal system.
Academically, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ghana before obtaining a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Law from the University of Leeds.
Prior to her elevation, Owusu-Ankomah served as an active member of the LCIA Court and played a significant role in expanding the institution’s engagement across the African continent.
She previously served as President of the LCIA African Users’ Council, where she helped strengthen relationships between the arbitration body and legal practitioners, businesses, and dispute-resolution stakeholders throughout Africa.
In her new role as Vice President, she will work closely with the LCIA Board and Court to supervise international arbitral tribunals, manage complex arbitrator appointments and challenges, and support the institution’s expanding caseload across emerging markets, particularly in Africa.
Her appointment comes at a time when African economies are increasingly turning to international arbitration mechanisms to resolve high-value commercial, infrastructure, mining, energy, and cross-border investment disputes.
Beyond her work with the LCIA, Owusu-Ankomah holds several influential positions within both local and international legal institutions.
She previously lectured in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) at the Ghana School of Law and also served as Chair of the Ghana Chapter of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).
In the United Kingdom, she is an Associate Member of 3 Verulam Buildings (3VB), one of London’s leading barristers’ chambers specializing in commercial litigation and arbitration.
Owusu-Ankomah also serves on the editorial board of Arbitration International, the peer-reviewed journal published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the LCIA.
Legal analysts say her appointment represents a significant achievement for Ghana’s legal profession and reflects the growing influence of African arbitration experts within global dispute resolution institutions.
