A 15-year-old Ghanaian student, Javits Frimpong, has died after being shot while walking to school in the Bronx, New York.
The shooting occurred on Thursday morning, October 29, 2026, in the Claremont neighborhood, near East 171st Street and Crotona Place.
Javits was shot in the abdomen and ran a short distance before collapsing. Police took him to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he later died.
Police search for suspects
New York Police Department investigators are searching for three teenagers in connection with the shooting. No arrests had been reported as of October 30, and police have not established a motive.
Police have asked anyone with information to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
Father raises bullying concerns
Javits’s father, Thomas Frimpong, said his son had recently complained about being bullied at school. He said school officials had informed him that two students were suspended following reports of harassment.

Thomas believes the shooting may be connected to those incidents. Police have not confirmed any link between the reported bullying and the killing, and the investigation is continuing.
Javits moved from Ghana to New York in 2025 to live with his father. His family remembered him as a bright student who wanted to become a doctor.
Ghana pledges support
Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it would engage United States authorities and provide appropriate consular and legal assistance to the family.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also spoke with Thomas Frimpong to convey condolences and assure the family of the government’s support.
