Two Ghanaian twin brothers and a woman from Hawaii have pleaded guilty in an Ohio federal court to participating in an international romance fraud network that caused losses exceeding US$9 million.
Jamal and Kamal Abubakari, both 22, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud on October 13, 2026. Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie, 53, entered her plea on October 20.
Prosecutors said the network targeted mainly older people through dating websites and social media between July 2024 and April 2026. Members used false identities to develop relationships before persuading victims to transfer money through fabricated stories.
Victims lived across 25 US states, Germany and Austria. Some proceeds were transferred to accomplices in Ghana and elsewhere.
The defendants agreed to forfeit seized jeweler, including luxury watches, rings, chains and earrings.
Each faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years, although the judge will determine the actual penalties.
The brothers are scheduled for sentencing on February 9, 2027, followed by Opoku-Boachie on February 10. The prosecution forms part of the US Department of Justice’s Elder Justice Initiative.
