Ghanaians Lose Over GH¢3.4 Million to Fake Online Investment Scams in First Half of 2026

Online Investment Scams

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has revealed that Ghanaians lost a staggering GH¢3,429,447 to fraudulent online investment schemes during the first six months of 2026.

In a public alert, the authority disclosed that it recorded 352 cyber fraud cases between January and June, with scammers using sophisticated tactics to deceive unsuspecting victims through fake investment opportunities, impersonated corporate identities, and local mobile money payment systems.

How the Fraudsters Operated

According to the CSA, cybercriminals employed several deceptive strategies to gain the trust of victims before stealing their money.

Fake International Brands

One of the most common tactics involved fraudsters posing as branches, affiliates, or subsidiaries of well-known international companies to create an appearance of legitimacy.

Among the fraudulent entities flagged by the CSA was Darazz, which falsely presented itself as being connected to a legitimate Pakistan-based e-commerce platform. Other fake investment brands identified include Daily Trade, Ghtore, KUKA, and Edollar.

By using familiar corporate names and professional-looking online platforms, scammers convinced many people that their investment offers were genuine.

High-Return Investment Promises

The scammers also capitalized on the growing popularity of digital investments by advertising unusually high and guaranteed returns.

Victims were encouraged to invest in purported cryptocurrency mining equipment leasing programs and online task platforms that claimed users could earn substantial income by completing simple digital assignments.

These schemes often promised quick profits with little or no risk, making them attractive to individuals seeking additional sources of income.

Social Media and WhatsApp Used to Build Trust

The CSA said the fraudulent operations relied heavily on social media advertising and private WhatsApp groups to recruit new victims.

Within these groups, scammers shared fabricated payment receipts, fake testimonials, and staged success stories to create the illusion that investors were earning significant returns.

The closed nature of these online communities made it easier for fraudsters to manipulate victims while limiting outside scrutiny.

Mobile Money Transfers Targeted

Investigators found that nearly all payments were processed through mobile money (MoMo) platforms.

Victims were instructed to transfer funds to activate accounts, purchase investment packages, or unlock higher earning tiers.

Once payments had been made, many victims reported being blocked from contacting the operators, leaving them unable to recover their money.

BoG and CSA Issue Public Warning

In response to the growing threat, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Cyber Security Authority have urged the public to exercise extreme caution before investing money online.

The agencies advised prospective investors to verify whether any investment company is licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) before making financial commitments.

They also warned the public to avoid so-called “money-doubling” schemes and advertisements promising unrealistic returns, emphasizing that no licensed financial institution in Ghana is authorized to operate such programs.

Media Houses Urged to Verify Advertisers

The Bank of Ghana further called on radio stations, television networks, and online media platforms to conduct thorough due diligence before accepting advertisements from financial service providers.

According to the central bank, responsible advertising practices are essential in protecting the public from fraudulent investment schemes and reducing the growing incidence of cyber-enabled financial crime.

The CSA has encouraged anyone who suspects an online investment opportunity may be fraudulent to report it immediately through the appropriate authorities and to avoid making payments until the legitimacy of the platform has been independently verified.
