Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland, Her Excellency Sabah Zita Benson, has been named African Ambassador of the Year at the prestigious Voice Achievers Awards.
The organisers describe the honour as the highest diplomatic recognition presented at the awards, celebrating ambassadors whose work has expanded the traditional role of diplomacy to include economic growth, diaspora engagement and the promotion of African pride.
The award ceremony, organised by The Voice Achievers Awards, a pan-African organisation that celebrates African excellence in the diaspora, is scheduled for Friday, August 21, 2026, at the iconic Hilton Kensington in London.
For High Commissioner Benson, the recognition marks another milestone in a diplomatic career focused on strengthening relations between Ghana, Africa and the international community.
The organisers cited her performance in economic diplomacy, particularly efforts to transform Ghana’s High Commission in London from a predominantly consular institution into a more active economic and investment hub.
According to the organisers, her initiatives have helped promote Ghana as an investment destination, with a focus on sectors including agribusiness, renewable energy, technology and the creative industries.
High Commissioner Benson was also recognised for championing a people-centred approach to diplomacy, through stronger engagement with Ghanaian and African communities across the UK and Ireland.
The organisers said her efforts have created stronger avenues for investment, skills transfer and cultural engagement, while also improving access to and responsiveness of consular services.
Her women- and youth-focused agenda was another factor cited in the award. Through her platform, she has supported the mentorship of young professionals and women in diplomacy, business and public service.
The Voice Achievers Awards said these initiatives have contributed to projecting a new image of African leadership on the global stage and demonstrated how modern diplomacy can contribute directly to investment, job creation and national branding.
With the honour, High Commissioner Benson joins a distinguished list of past recipients, including Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Ambassador to Spain and Ghana; Ambassador Dr Eniola Ajayi, Nigeria’s former Ambassador to Hungary and the Netherlands; Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s former Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration; and Ambassador Dr Fatou Bensouda, The Gambia’s High Commissioner to the UK and former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.
The August 21 ceremony is expected to attract diplomats, government officials, business leaders and members of the African diaspora from across the world.
