Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Her Excellency Sabah Zita Benson, has been named African Ambassador of the Year by The Voice Achievers Award.
The honour was announced ahead of the organization’s global awards ceremony, scheduled for August 21, 2026, at the Hilton Kensington in London.
Organizers described the recognition as the highest diplomatic honour to be presented during the ceremony. It celebrates African diplomats who have transformed their missions into platforms for economic development, international cooperation and diaspora empowerment.
Advancing Ghana’s Economic Diplomacy
Since assuming office, Ambassador Benson has worked to reposition the Ghana High Commission in London beyond its traditional consular responsibilities.
Under her leadership, the mission has become an active centre for trade promotion and investment engagement. Her diplomatic initiatives have focused on attracting foreign direct investment into key sectors of Ghana’s economy, including agribusiness, renewable energy, technology and the creative industry.
The High Commissioner has also promoted Ghana as an attractive destination for international investors while encouraging partnerships capable of creating jobs and supporting sustainable economic growth.
Strengthening Diaspora and Business Connections
Ambassador Benson’s recognition also reflects her efforts to deepen Ghana’s relationship with its diaspora community in the United Kingdom and other international markets.
She has helped build strategic connections between Ghana, the wider African continent and the global business community. These efforts have included creating opportunities for African small and medium-sized enterprises to engage with international investors and access potential sources of capital.
Her approach places diaspora engagement at the centre of economic diplomacy, highlighting the important role Ghanaians living abroad can play in trade, investment and national development.
Breaking Diplomatic Barriers
Appointed in 2025, Ambassador Benson became Ghana’s first female High Commissioner to the United Kingdom since the country gained independence in 1957.
She achieved another historic milestone in early 2026 when she became the first high commissioner from any country since 1910 to present Letters of Credence to a monarch at St James’s Palace.
Her selection as African Ambassador of the Year therefore recognizes both her groundbreaking diplomatic career and her efforts to use Ghana’s mission in London as a platform for economic opportunity, international cooperation and diaspora inclusion.
The award will be formally presented during The Voice Achievers Award ceremony in London on August 21, 2026.
